Paper Mache Eggs

I have to apologise in advance, this is a long post with a lot of pictures so if you suffer from 'numb bum' syndrome move along now!

It's not that I am a mother obsesed with her children's hands and crafting, although what a magical thing to witness, but this project has taken over two days to complete - sorry!

For the past two days now I have been in the garden with the older two making paper mache Easter eggs to decorate.

It was one of those 'the children are at home, what am I going to do with them?' situations.

So after scouring the Internet and a fair few crafty books for Easter 'make' ideas I cobbled together this one from several other 'to make' ideas.

I found the smallest balloons I could in the house which happened to be water balloons left over from last summer...

...then mixed up a paste of flour and water.

Cut an old newspaper into strips...

...and then the children dunked them into the floury paste and placed them all over the balloons.

{The eldest Boo thought he would be very clever and dunk the 'whole' balloon!}

Then when all were covered I hung them up to dry with the days washing!

It is a really messy job which is why we were in the garden and this project took over two days as we needed the paper mache balloon 'eggs' to fully dry.

Today when they had set rock solid we each took a pin and popped the covered balloons. All three of us admitted that, that was the best part!

We all stood back, eyes squinted ready for a huge 'bang' but they just fizzled in a deflated (sorry) kind of way!

The children (for once) decided it would be sensible to paint their eggs all one colour, William choose green and 'guess what' colour Florrie choose -

Pink!

Then they went mad with the glue and decorations...

...and this is what they made!

The only thing I'm not too sure about is whether to thread ribbon onto them (somehow) and hang them in the garden or just leave them as they are - what do you think?

Not bad at all and it kept them fairly occupied, now what to do tomorrow? Maybe biscuits or even cakes!

ps. I spied the first Bluebells coming up in the garden today - goodie!

Your super colourful post really made me smile! Love the pic of the paper mache eggs drying on the washing line. I think tying all your eggs onto ribbon and dangling them in the garden is a superb idea but then I am queen of dangling anything I can find on a bit of ribbon!!
Loving the label 'numb bum syndrome' at the end of your post too!!!!!

I have that same basket :) I use it on my bedside table to corral all the junk that I accumulate like nail files, chapstick, tv remotes, etc. Great job on the eggs!

It's lovely, well worth getting a 'numb bum' for. I think I'll have a go at that myself next Easter. I missed out on so much being away with that rotten bug.
