Crazy Patchwork Star

Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As the title hints I finally managed to make my first ever crazy patchwork star.

Well crazy patchwork thingy 'm' jig really as even though patchwork and quilting is my main sewing thing I have never 'ever' made anything using this technique before.

And as I promised when I wrote a review about the ever so lovely Ginny and Alice's new book Home Sweet Sewn a couple of weeks ago a crazy patchwork star was one of the things I wanted to try immediately...

...well I say immediately - a couple of weeks is pretty good going for me and is actually me saying 'I am going to do that immediately' really!!

I did post a little 'hint' picture yesterday - do you remember?? And wondered whether anyone would notice. But as subtle as I am nobody did comment on the random starry picture in my 'Ordinary Day'

Anyway, back to my 'crazy' patchwork. Now I know this star doesn't look anything like the one in the book, but there are some very good reasons for that - honest.

Firstly as mentioned I have never, ever done anything remotely crazy in a patchwork sense of the word so this was my first attempt - an experiment or mock up if you like.

Secondly I tend to go for the red, white and silver as Christmas colours soooooooo I took a chance on using my favourite colours for my experimental star just in case it turned out half decent and I could hang it on the tree.

And thirdly, Little Miss T had hid my copy of Home Sweet Sewn in amongst the huge Christmassy magazine pile I have going on in the front room at the moment so I had to make it from memory.

OK, analysis time :: welllllll even though my points aren't really pointy enough (I think I may sew sequins or little bells onto the ends next time) anddddddd......... I haven't really embellished it enough with embroidery and beads, I think anyhow - all in all I'm really rather chuffed with the way it turned out and it only took me a couple of hours - from start to finish plus...

...I am 'that' chuffed with it 'yes really I am' that it will be adorning our Christmas tree in a couple of weeks time - is that all it is?? And hopefully for many, many years to come.

Along with the other ten or so I'm planning to make!!

Wish me luck!

I LOve it Nina! Feel most inspired now, partly to go buy that gorgeous book by the equally lovely Ginny and her pal, Alice, and partly to start making one myself. x

It's great! I don't think it needs anymore glittery embellishment type things adding to it, it looks just fine as it is :)

Good luck with the others!

It's gorgeous Nina, well done you. It doesn't matter if you haven't done enough embroidery or you don't think that your points are pointy enough. You made it yourself and that's the joy of homemade in my humble opinion. Dev x

hi Nina,
i always check in at your blog each morning and i did notice your stars in your last post. i wanted to leave a comment but was really pushed for time as we had our official launch last night!! (nursing a sore head this morning).
i love your red and gold star! i think it looks great as it is and doesn't need any extra embellishment but as you suggested a bead or sequin at each point would look good. i am going to set up that flickr group for projects from the book and would love you to add your star(s).
i can't wait to see them adorning your tree..
i am starting to feel in the festive mood too and once a few more work projects are complete i am going to start present making and holiday planning :)
wishing you a lovely day

Following your post I sent off for that book too and it is lovely. I prefer your stars to those in the book - really! I love the bright colours and they are so Christmassy. Crazy IS my thing and I had intended to make one/some but life got in the way so now am inspired to get on and do some. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hello Nina, your star is great. I love that you made it your own, and not the same as the book. Happy patching with the next ten.

Two weeks is really good going around three kids and all the other madness of general life. Great star.

Is that one of those mini iron things Nina? Are they really handy as I've had my eye on them for a while?

Hi Nina. Your star is fab! I do crazy patchwork all the time....I love it...no rules anything goes.I love making my Tilly Patch Hearts to sell I have such fun choosing colours, threads, buttons etc. Don't worry yourself about being perfect (as I've learnt!) as the project will get too complicated. I get alot of inspiration from Australian craft sites as it's big business out there.
look forward to seeing your other projects..

It's fabulous! You are a star! (get it?!)

It's streets ahead of anything I could do, although I am forming a vague plan of 'making things' over Christmas.

Is the fatter, more stuffed one the one from the book? If so I prefer your flatter one myself.

Well done!

Love Charlotte
