Don't you just love that word - Suffolk Puffs??
'or' Yo Yo's to you and me.
'or' Yo Yo's to you and me.
It was only last weekend when the very lovely Jenny at JennyFlower showed me how to make one of these lovely little delicate flowery thingies that I realised what a fabric yo yo was. Up until that point I didn't have a clue, let alone how to make one .
So when she mentioned about making some to string together to make Christmas trees I thought I had completely missed heard (or lost the plot!!) because yo yo's for me are those plastic toy things that you always get in a Christmas cracker with string wrapped around their middles that you spin up and down, up and down - well try to anyhow. Mine aways got tangled up within minutes and were promptly thrown in the bin!
But the penny did drop, eventually (ahem) and she put us to work making some of these little beauties and now - I'm addicted!!
Have you seen what beautiful things she makes with hers?? (check out her Folksy shop)

Now I haven't gone completely bonkers - not yet anyhow in case you were wondering.
I know it was only yesterday I was harping on about making 'Crazy Patchwork Christmas Stars' from the gorgeous crafty book 'Home Sweet Sewn' but even I don't get bored that quickly when making something - fickle I may be and have an attention span of a three year old, but my staying power is a little bit stronger than that.

Anyhow, I was just kind of experimenting last night - as you do and completely overwhelmed myself (it doesn't take much, really) by making more than just a couple.

ps. here is a 'How to Make a Yo Yo' from Heather Bailey if you too like me like the look of these little beauties!

{I secretly think they look like little mini shower caps!!}
I only actually sat down for about an hour last night and lookie what I made.

So I'm thinking, stocking fillers for the girls - hair slides maybe.
Unusual, unique and really rather pretty if I do say so myself - 'Oh' I do, I do.

Now I really should stop dallying around with yo yo's and get back to my 'crazy stars' as Christmas is just around the corner and I must 'oh yes' have some more - just another ten odd or so to make!!

They're lovely. Suffolk Puffs have they're own sweet charm don't they?
I started to make a quilt out of them (a long time ago), which is still unfinished, after seeing a vintage one in my friends cottage hung over the banister. It was perfect. And I was just thinking yesterday we have the perfect banister here. So I must get going with it again. In fact the fabrics used will be vintage now, though they weren't when I started. Maybe you have given me the kick start I needed.
Oh Nina, when I saw the title of your post Suffolk Puffs I just had to have a lookie (being a Suffolk girl). They are really pretty and would make excellent stocking fillers - they may even be easy enough for me to make!
Have a lovely day. Jeanne x
I thought at first you had rushed out and bought a yoyo maker - I was rather taken by those, having laboriously drawn out circles on fabric before, or desperately tried to find the right size saucer or plate! Yours look very pretty - I rather like the pink spotty fabric.

Now those look fun to make - have saved that link for later :)
Thanks for showing the 'how to'! They are lovely.
I've been in our doctor's waiting room a fair bit recently and have seen a French magazine with the most wonderful throw/wall hanging made from large, random-sized yo-yos, but I lacked confidence to get it started as I'd only read the instructions in French, and needed a bit of a confidence-boost before beginning.
So, here I go...
Oh my word, are we living in a parallel universe! I started making Suffolk puffs yesterday to decorate a wool Christmas stocking,I was insired by my Sew Pretty Christmas Homestyle book. I made some in red gingham too! I was explaining to my mum on the phone what I had been making"They look like little mini shower caps" I explained. They are addictive to make , I did 10 whilst watching Emmerdale.I going to add them to hair grips today for stocking fillers!
Have a lovely day!

brilliant idea for stocking fillers Nina. Will add them to my ever-growing list x
I bought a template for something very similar to those recently - mine makes flowers but the method is the same. Yours look very sweet - I plump for the gingham, I'm a sucker for gingham! Thanks for the Heather Bailey link and keep up with the yo-yo's!
so cute! All the way through the entry I was like -I want to know how to make them too!!! So thanks for the link! Yours look great! xxx
Hello again Nina, I loved the 'tipple', so did my son! I agree with you, it would be lovely with a dash of Cointreau in it, but perhaps I'll wait until December for that!

My what fine Suffolk Puffs my dear! They are good fun aren't they? I love 'em. Looking forward to seeing where you find to sew them. xxxx (thanks for the lovely links too!)
Hi Nina, I actually have a little gadget to make my yoyo's. It is sort of round and you sew all around the edges and then slip it off, and so on. Haven't used it for ages and now I am going to have to dig it out. Dev x
