I've been 'ummming' and 'aaahhhhing' for ages now about investing in a good crochet book, but with so many on offer out there - what do you choose?
Being a beginner with a head that jumbles things up at the best of times something so simply as reading a pattern can turn my usual calm approach to most things into a head that feels like it is about to explode.
It is just all double dutch to me!!
So after spending what feels like an age on Amazon searching, reading reviews, asking fellow bloggers advice (thanks guys) I think I've found the perfect follow on book - for me anyhow.
A book I'm hoping will give me the next step up from some of the more simpler step by step (verbal) patterns I've been using on the Internet - which I have to say are an absolute invaluable source and I most definitely could not live without.
But progress I must as I do love this new found craft.
Not that I will solely be crafting just crochet these days 'oh no' I do have a head full of ideas that need sorting, categorising and filing away for a rainy day when I can actually have the time to think about each one.
Anyhow, back to the book. After much looking around I decided on this book - the Rowen Crochet Workshop
Now I wouldn't say this is a step by step verbal (wrap the yarn around the hook) kind of book, but it does have lots of illustration and a mass of ideas in a terminology that I can just about understand.
So deviating from the blanket yesterday I picked up a new hook and a bit of left over yarn and had a go at making a crochet button.
It took me four attempts to fathom out what I should (kind of) be doing and I'm still not sure if I followed the pattern correctly as even though it was a 'refer to a previous tutorial in three easy picture steps' then continue, I am not that confidant I truly understood but.......
....I am happy with the end result and it only took me roughly around half an hour - which is about the maximum length of concentration time my little ones will allow me.
Gawd knows what I'll use it on, in, for.......but it was good fun just trying something different.
Do you have any firm favourites, easy to follow that you refer to time and again crochet books??
Have a lovely day - the mist and rain have lifted here, but it is still grey!!
xXx

Great recommendation - I will definitely keep this in mind. However you're way further down the field than I am - you can do a blanket!
I love your crochet button... it's brilliant... you'll soon be churning them out by the dozen! How about making a few and then turn them into a necklace, along with some other choice beads... it would look FAB!
Have fun... grey and wet here too :(!
Love Yvonne xx
Erika Knight does some lovely crochet books!
Vivienne :)
Oooo I likey- might have to ask the library if I can have a borrow of that book!
aw...your button is so cute...it's...well....'cute as a button!' lol
the love of crochet will never die out! my mother passed the skill down to me....and then teaching myself to read patterns has opened up a new and bigger world of crocheting!
thanks for coming by and leaving a comment!

Your book looks fab, think I may return the scary blocks book for this one! A bit more realistic of my skill level too!
Button looks such a great shape. I can see it as jewellry or threaded as garlands around here there and everywhere.

i always find crochet terminology a bit double dutch - I tend to get mixed up with knitting stuff , so well done you . I was thinking a few more for a necklace too...... oh , the word verification is pizza lol
Loving the button...it's not a crochet book, but I do enjoy a regular flick through the Homemade book by Ros Badger. Always good for a bit of inspiration! x
Hi Nina will have to look out for this one as it looks really good. As for the buttons, I think that they would be great as a fastening on a cushion but on the right side if you see what I mean, rather than on the back. Dev x
Hi there,
I'd spotted that book on amazon too, but already own too many (is there such a thing!) crochet books.
As to getting bigger photos on blogger, I explained how I did it the post of 12th Feb on my blog. I only usually bother to do it for scenic shots but it makes a HUGE difference I think, I like them anyway!
Anne.
Ooh lovely, it's always good to have a recommendation so it is now on my wish list. Coming from Rowan it ought to be a goodie.
Lovely button, are you going to make more!

Lovely button! Well done. I can't read a crochet pattern unless it has stitch by stitch instructions with photos :-)
Unfortunately I have no crochet resources to recommend other than my mum. I am totally clueless when it comes to crochet - but you little button looks cute!
Wonderful little button! My Great Grandmother taught me to crochet, so I never had any beginner books. But really, once you suss out the odd terms, you can do about anything. Definitely fond of the books with pictures!
I wing crocheting...so I thought I would bring a couple of books back from the Library...it's the terminology too for me which is really hard...I LOVE your button though...it's great!
Have a good day.
Char
that looks like a really good book would love to hear how you get on with it
Great recommendation! I have wanted to start crocheting myself! Have a sweet day!
Oh I love it Nina. Do some mmore and put them on a jacket or something. Maybe different colours? x
That book looks awesome. I am going to pick that up. I had those blocks as a kid, and I LOVED them. What a great find.
