Cherries

The eldest Boo came home from a friends house yesterday evening huffing and puffing laden down with what looked like a very heavy carrier bag.

I say this in a casual kind of way - as if it's an every day occurrence.

Just trying to get our eldest to carry a dirty sock to the laundry basket is more effort then he can cope with!

More crap - I muttered under my breath as I caught a glimpse of the bag in hand.

'I thought I told you no more swapsies!' mumble, mumble, mumble. 'You're not Noel bleeding Edmond's - don't you know!'

And..........

'You're late' I grumbled at him as he closed the front door.

'But muuummmmmmm' he wailed 'I had to wait'

'My friends mum wanted you to have these' thrusting the carrier bag in my direction.

~ Cue squeal ~

'CHERRIES' I uuummmmmmm, squealed!

A bag full of wonderful, fresh, red ripe cherries. Oh my goodness - you beautiful, beautiful boy.

(Teach me to be one of those nagging parents)

The only tricky part of this story was trying to get the smallest Boo to keep still while I took some pictures. Cherries are her achilles heal!

The colander was quite full though, but she did do a wonderful job - holding, keeping still and not diving into her temptation.

I still had to bribe her with the odd cherry - or two.

Now they are sat on the side in their beautiful mint green colander winking at me every time I walk past - what to do with them, what to do with them - apart from eat......of course.

Any ideas?

xXx

Honestly I would just eat them. Oh, and pretend they are earrings of course. They are such a treat aren't they? I bought some English cherries this morning for dinner tonight.

How lovely and such a treat! I love them but they make my mouth itch!
I think they'd just be eaten at my house! They wouldn't last long enough to make a decision!

they are bad for you. put them in a tupperware box at once, and have them express delivered to me where I will look after them for you!

My father is a cherry grower, so we get quite a few, and
to be honest all I ever do is gobble them up, very quickly! But if you can't manage that cherry jam is very nice, and cherry clafoutis.

If you freeze them with the stones in they keep their colour and are nice in cherry pie or compote in the winter. If you stone them first, they tend to go brown when frozen.

Hope you are going to come over and join my giveaway?

Nina, my Mum makes the most delicious Cherry Sauce for sweet cold rice pudding...it's divine...I don't know the recipe...but it's scandinavian...I think Scandinavians have LOTS of recipes for cherries...STAMPING with cherries is fun too as a craft!
I hope you'll check next time you "think" there may be "crap" in that bag...lol.

We have a cherry tree and have been feasting this last week. Should you get tired of eating them unadorned might I suggest clafoutis, beloved in this household, a sort of cherry Yorkshire Pud, what's not to like. And last year I made 23 jars of cherry jam, they were all gone by February, cherry jam is quite the thing with winter porridge.

Now that is a great surprise! We make a cherry pasta with arugula, mascarpone, and pine nuts that is really rather scrumptious. Can't wait to hear what you make with this lovely bunch,

I can't think of anything more delicious than a big cherry pie! Of course, I once pitted a couple of cups, sizzled them in butter, o.j., sugar, and a teeny bit of Gran Marnier, then poured over crepes...delicious.

Whatever you do, I know it'll be special and yummy.

Beautiful! No idea what to make with them as although along with watermelons they look wonderful, I cannot actually bear the taste!!!

Cherry jam, cherry clafoutis, cherry liqueur, oooh so many possibilities. Although, seeing as they are my all time favourite fruit (I would rather eat cherries than chocolate, shock horror!) I would be tempted to keep some aside for munching just as they are. Enjoy. xx

I've been lucky too, my ex-husband brought me that many yesterday. I don't do anything other than wash and eat them, far too precious a taste to mess around with.

Oh wow! These are beautiful photos. The amazing thing is that cherry season finished a month ago here near Tours. Our tree, which was laden and groaning last year, was pretty lightweight this year. This, according to an elderly couple living in our neighbouring vineyards, is something to do with north winds blowing during blossom time. If your tree is sheltered from north winds then your crop will not be affected.

If you are interesting in a cherry clafoutis recipe I'll send one your way.

What a fabulous surprise Nina. They'd get scoffed here in no time. I'd go for lots of eating and a hot cherry pie with cream for afters.

Likewise, we've just been given some cherries, lovely. I made some jam and think I may make a pie or a tart. I've just enjoyed some with my meusli. Enjoy yours however you have them.

I too would eat them up just as they are - though I once made a fantastic dessert (can't remember where I got the recipe) - stone the cherries and arrange in a blind baked (or bought) shortcrust pastry case, then pour over an egg custard mix and bake. It was most delicious.
